When the 2016-‘17 school year began, entry forms were given to local students in high school and junior high.

They were asked to voice their opinions on patriotism and democracy by writing essays and submitting them to their local Veterans of Foreign Wars/Veterans Auxiliary for a chance to win scholarships. The theme for high school was "My Responsibility to America" and junior high was "The America I Believe In."

Canton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9171/Veterans Auxiliary and Athens Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7103 both had entries make it through the local, district and state level. At the high school level senior David Rhodes New Frontiers Lighthouse Christian in Canton, was escorted to an all-expense paid trip to Austin for the Mid-Year Conference by District 30 President, Ed and Linda Faught.
