Supt. Baker updates board on legislation

Edgewood ISD Superintendent Andy Baker updated the Edgewood School Board at the February meeting on a few bills that will be in the legislature this session.

“Governor Abbott wants to increase funding for education, including pre-kindergarten, but the House of Representatives has removed all state funding for the program. Edgewood offers half day pre-k classes; therefore, the funding they receive is minimal,” said Baker.

Superintendent Baker also updated the board that funding “funding might be changing depending on the actions of the Senate.”

Baker reported that new bills will address funding issues for school districts that cover less than 300 square miles.

“The small districts have received less funding for the past 30 years but the legislature will be reviewing the process.”
