Summer heat is here and cooling bills will soar.  Practicing heat safety is especially important for those with fragile health, the elderly, those disabled or those with young children.  Avoiding excessive heat is essential for those with health issues.

Greater East Texas Community Action Program will offer energy assistance services for residents in Van Zandt County.

Families are encouraged to apply now as more than one month of assistance could be available.  There are several ways to access assistance.  The GETCAP website provides a mail-in application as well as an 800# for assistance.

Visit www.get-cap.org or call 800-621-5746 for information or the application.

Local face-to-face appointments can be scheduled by calling the 800#.  Eligibility is based on household income and circumstances. Not every household will qualify.   Teresa Land shared “families are struggling as well as those on a fixed income.  Elderly or disabled individuals may have fragile health and budget challenges.   Now is the time to go to our website.”

Karen Swenson, Executive Director explained “GETCAP has served a number of households but we believe there are many more who should be applying.  We encourage people to apply right away as funding may diminish.  Those with fragile health are always a concern.”

Targeted groups include low income elderly, disabled, and families with young children.  Proof of household income is required and not everyone qualifies
