Van Zandt County football teams finished play a combined 3-3 overall Sept. 29, including wins by all three county representatives that finished the 2016 as either outright or co-district champions, the Van Vandals, Edgewood Bulldogs and Wills Point Tigers.

Through five weeks of the season, Van currently sits at 5-0, Edgewood is 4-1, Canton is 2-3, Wills Point is 1-4, and Fruitvale and Grand Saline are both 0-5.

The Canton Eagles officially hit the halfway point of the regular season Sept. 29, wrapping up the non-district portion of their schedule with a 35-13 Homecoming night loss to the visiting Paris North Lamar Panthers.

The Eagle defense stood tall throughout most of the first half, bottling up a potent Paris North Lamar offense until late in the first quarter. Canton held an early 7-0 lead in the contest on a McGwire Martin touchdown run and looked to add another score just before halftime on a drive deep into Panther territory.

Paris North Lamar was able to turn back the challenge, sparking a run of 35 unanswered points that changed the dynamics of the game entirely. Canton ended play on a positive note, getting a touchdown reception from Tanner Moore with time expiring to cut the final Eagle deficit to 35-13.

Canton, Wills Point, Dallas Lincoln, Dallas Roosevelt, Ferris and Rains were all scheduled to be off Oct. 6 before returning to the gridiron Oct. 13 for the start of District 6-4A play. District opening matchups are set to include Canton hosting Ferris, Wills Point hosting Dallas Roosevelt, and Emory Rains hosting Dallas Lincoln.

The Edgewood Bulldogs continued to generate positive momentum as they reached their open date Oct. 6, dominating the visiting Quinlan Boles Hornets 42-14 Sept. 29 to improve to 4-1 overall on the season.

Jordan Davison and Carter Bates played starring roles in the effort against Boles with Davison scoring three times, including receptions of 70-, 20- and 15-yards and Bates scoring twice from 35- and 46-yards out.

Despite resting many of their starters for the third and fourth quarters in most games played this season, Edgewood has outscored opponents by a combined total of 206-84 through five games.
