Genealogical Society presents awards

The Van Zandt County Genealogical Society announced the winners of the 2017 Family History Writing Contest at the meeting held Nov. 28 at the County Library. 

President Carrie Woolverton presented certificates to those present.  The winners were, first place Martha Heard, second place Sandra Jones and third place Mary Jane Gamon.

 The program for the meeting was Show & Tell, with members sharing family heirlooms and other genealogical items of interest. 

Society officers for 2018 were also elected.  The new officers are President, Carrie Woolverton; First Vice President, Sandra Jones; Second Vice President, Beth Gordon; Treasurer, Scott Fitzgerald; Recording Secretary, Imogene Kirkpatrick; Corresponding Secretary, Sylvia Barbee; Quarterly Editor, Laurie McDonald; Public Relations, Sherrie Archer; Directors at Large, Tom Tyler and Shirley Fuller; Webmaster, Jan Crow; Historian, Donna Carter; Hospitality Chairman Margaret Hoot; Parliamentarian, Donna Carter; and County Historian, Elvis Allen.   

The next monthly meeting of the Genealogical Society will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, at the County Library for the installation of officers.  The monthly meetings held the fourth Saturday of each month, with the exception of December, are free and all are welcome to attend.  For information about society meetings, contact the Library of Genealogy and Local History located in the courthouse annex in Canton, 903-567-5012.
