Master Wellness volunteers complete training

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service of Van Zandt County agent Melisa Rhodes recently instructed the first Master Wellness Volunteer training program.

Rhodes remarked, “the first and last classes were held in person at our office with Katie Phillips of Kaufman County Extension office assisting with instruction while the other three were online courses.”  The inaugural group of Master Wellness Volunteers of Van Zandt County completed the 40 hours of training in health and nutrition, and passed the certification exam to become certified volunteers were Nancy Crim of Ben Wheeler, Bob Moore of Canton and Patsy Shaw of Martins Mill.

Michels, Harris wed

Kristi Ann Michels and Mark Thomas Harris were married April 22, 2017, at St. Roch Catholic Church, Indianapolis, Ind. with Fr. James Wilmoth officiating. 

The bride is the daughter of Tim and Patti Michels of Edgewood. The bridegroom is the son of Tom and Jane Harris of Indianapolis. 

The bride is a graduate of The University of Dallas. She is employed as a project coordinator at St. Vincent’s Hospital.

The bridegroom is a graduate of Indiana University-Purdue University and is employed at Citizen’s Energy. The couple lives in Indianapolis.

Birth Announcement

It’s a girl!

Brian and Lana Abbott are happy to announce the birth of Lucy Gail Abbott. She was born on at 8 a.m. Friday, Dec. 30, 2016, at Baylor Scott & White Hospital in Dallas.
Lucy measured 19 1/2 inches and tipped the scales at 8 lbs. 7 oz.
She was joyously greeted at home by big brothers, Brady Jack and Caleb Nolan.
Proud grandparents are Richard and Carol Abbott of Mesquite; Jim and Janet Davis, Bill and Donna Burns and Kevin Wilkerson, all of Canton.
Great-grandparents are the late Tince and Bonnie Abbott and James and Martha Fuller,
Wick and the late Dixye Wilkerson, Gerald and Dana Beth Chamblee, all of Canton.

Sheriff speaks to groups

Bella Notte at Grand Saline High School

Grand Saline High School held the 2017 junior/senior prom Saturday, March 25. The event was held at Villa di Felicita in Tyler with the theme of “Belle Notte,” which is translated to “beautiful night.” Members of the junior and senior classes took photographs with their dates before the event. Emma Elliott and Sammy Palma were crowned Homecoming Queen and King, respectively.

Salt Museum receives grant

The Grand Saline Salt Museum received a $10,000 grant from Union Pacific for the Grand Saline Salt Museum March 28. Representatives Dan Harbekea and Andrew Hudanish presented the check.

Harbeke remarked, “Union Pacific is pleased to present this grant for the Grand Saline Salt Museum for their transportation exhibit.”

The Grand Saline Salt Museum is set to open in 2018. A virtual tour of the salt mine will be one of the highlights of the museum.

National Library Week set for April 9-15

National Library Week is a time to celebrate our nation’s libraries and library workers for transforming lives through free access to technology, information literacy, diverse collections and opportunities for community engagement. Everyone that visits Van Zandt County Library during National Library Week will receive a light up stylus pen compliments of the Friends of the Library.

This year’s theme for National Library Week is “Libraries Transform,” and Olympic soccer gold medalist and World Cup champion Julie Foudy is lending her support as National Library Week Honorary Chair. Foudy is helping to shine a light on the value of all types of libraries – school, public, academic and special – and the expertise of library workers.

Brandy Cockerham and David Fisher Sr.

Brandy Erin Cockerham, a medical laboratory technician at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital at Kaufman, is to be married to David Christopher Fisher Sr., a master carpenter and foreman at Lawrence Paint and Remodeling of Gun Barrel. 

Miss Cockerham is the daughter of Mr. Daniel Cockerham and Mrs. Robin Cockerham of Canton. 

The wedding will be held at the First United Methodist Church of Canton on Oct. 7, 2017.

“Rose” added to MMISD library

In late December 2016, the Van Zandt News ran a series of articles called, “I survived,” a story about a young girl named Rose who lived through the terrors of Nazi-occupied Vienna, Austria. Gary Vawter took Rose’s memoirs and complied them into a book.

Rose Scott and Gary Vawter visited Martins Mill ISD and presented the book to the school’s library. Lola House and Mikayla Martin represented the district and accepted the book to add to the school’s collection.
