Services for Ruth Sayers Adkins, 80, of Grand Saline, were held Sept. 26, 2015, at Main Street Baptist Church. Bro. Paul Henry and Dr. Bruce Smilie officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Bartley Funeral Home. 

Interment followed in Silver Lake Cemetery.

Ruth Adkins passed away Sept. 23, 2015, in Garland.  She was born Oct. 25, 1934, in Van Zandt County to Eddie Joel and Fannie Wade Starnes Sayers.  She spent most of her life in the Silver Lake Community and retired as a real estate broker. 

Mrs. Adkins was a member of Main Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school for over 25 years and was in the Friendship Class and Fun after 55 group.  She was also a member of the Grand Saline Study Club, served as secretary of Silver Lake Cemetery Association for many years and was involved in a special social group called "IFFS".

Services for Peggy Jeanie Breaux, 64, of Wills Point were held Sept. 25, 2015, at St. Therese Catholic Church of Canton.

Peggy Breaux passed away Sept. 22, 2015, in Wills Point.

She was born Oct. 13, 1950, in Beaumont to Wallace and Peggy Foster Howard.

She was Catholic by faith and a member of St. Therese Catholic Church in Canton. She loved sports, bowling, and softball. She was an accomplished photographer and enjoyed taking all kinds of pictures. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

Mrs. Breaux is preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial Services for June Carolyn Kilstrom were held Sept. 26, 2015, at Aria Cremation Service and Funeral Home Chapel in Irving.  Dr. Causey E. Gram III officiated. 

Inurment will be held at 10:15 a.m. Oct. 9, 2015, at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas.

Carolyn Kilstrom was born in Delight, Ark., June 14, 1934. She passed away Sept. 19, 2015, at the age of 81. 

She was preceded in death by her husband for 40 years, Wilford Marvin “Red” Kilstrom; her parents, Jewel Edward Lewallen and Alma Louise Cook; and granddaughter, Lovia Frances Fegan-Smith.

She is survived by her children, Dennis Edward “Eddie” Smith, Terry Lee Smith and Gary Wayne Smith; grandchildren, Amanda Smith, Matthew Smith, Nicole Carol Baker, Spencer Smith, Chase Smith and Mason Smith; as well as several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Edith Faye Samford were held Sept. 29, 2015, at Eubank Funeral Home.

Edith Samford was born Aug. 11, 1924, and passed of natural causes Sept. 26, 2015. 

She spent her youth in East Texas, graduating from Edgewood High School.  She and Ethan Truman Samford were married in 1945.  Together they made their home in Dallas and later in Canton.  They were married for 51 years before he died in 1996.

After moving to Canton in 1974, she discovered a love for the game of golf and began playing at age 50.  She was an active member of the Van Zandt Country Club Ladies Golf Association until she was 82.  She and Truman also loved to travel and did so extensively in their motorhome, accompanied by other camper friends.  She spent the last three years of her life at Christian Care Center in Mesquite where she made many new friends.

Funeral services for Arbee McKnight, 93, of Wills Point, were held Sept. 30, 2015, at Russell Memorial United Methodist Church in Wills Point with Pastor David Cartwright officiating.

Interment followed at White Rose Cemetery in Wills Point under the direction of Allan Fuller Funeral Home in Wills Point.

She passed away Sept. 27, 2015, at Crestwood Nursing Home in Wills Point.

Arbee McKnight was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Wills Point, the daughter of William Thomas Grier Sr. and Dollie R.B. McDonald Grier.

Nathan Leslie James, 74, of New Bern, N.C., died Sept. 9, 2015, after a lengthy illness. 

He passed peacefully at home with his devoted wife of 28 years holding his hand.

Mr. James was a native of Wills Point and long-time resident of Beaumont before moving to New Bern, N.C., 19 years ago. 

His parents, Leslie Melvin James and Lucile Stewart James of Wills Point, predecease him. 

Survivors include his wife, Peggy Hall James of the home; one sister, Gleith Mann (Jim) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; two step-sons, David Scott (Kathy) and Michael Wilson; two granddaughters, Jamie Scott and Paislee Wilson, all of Beaumont; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Rhonda Begin (Don) of Fort Collins, Colo., Cami Mourao (John) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Leslie Mann of Jacksonville, Fla.

Funeral services for Nancy June Land, 61, of Bar Nunn, Wy., formerly of Wills Point were held Sept.18, 2015, at Bustards Funeral Home in Casper, Wy.  She passed away Sept. 14, 2015, in Wyoming.

Burial was held Sept. 21, 2015, at Union Grove Cemetery.  Local services are held by Hiett's LyBrand Funeral Home in Wills Point.

Mary Curtis

Mary Curtis

Mary Louise Curtis, 78, of Canton died Sept. 16, 2015, in Canton. 

Mrs. Curtis was born April 9, 1937, in Los Angeles, Calif. to James and Evelyn Altmeyer.

She served in the United States Navy as a Navy photographer and printer. She headed up the Navy Drum and Bugle Corp and served as the drum major in the U.S. Navy Band. While serving in the Navy, she met and married the love of her life, Charles Curtis in 1958. 

She worked for many years at Lockheed Aircraft before moving to Texas. Their family moved to Canton in 1976, where they raised their five children.
