CANTON – The Canton Eaglettes got off on the right foot in District 15-3A play on Jan. 3, picking up an 85-45 win over the visiting Athens Lady Hornets.
Canton got off to a fast start courtesy of a strong defensive effort, building up a 33-14 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The two teams began trading free throw attempts in the second quarter, thanks in large part to foul calls against each teams reaching double-digits. Entering the half, the Eaglettes held a 49-25 advantage.
Canton extended their lead by two more points at the end of the third, and then exploded over the final 8 minutes of play.
The Eaglettes outscored the Lady Hornets 20-6 in the fourth quarter, securing the 85-45 win.
Senior Caridad Aguilar and Bryla Barker finished as the most consistent offensive threats for Athens, combining for 36 points in the loss.
Canton got a balanced effort offensively, five players posting double digits in points. Kassidy Wilkerson led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, including five 3-pointers, Madison McCaffity scored 17 points, Courtney Roberts scored 14 points, Holly Raitz scored 12 points and Dani Pruitt scored 10 points.
Canton, now 16-5 on the season and 1-0 in district play, will hit the court again at home against Mineola on Jan. 10, and play in Brownsboro on Jan. 14.
