The Wills Point High School Band program, which has already put together a banner 2012-2013 season, received more good news this week with the announcement that band member Whitney McSparrin has earned a spot on the All-State Band.
Band director John Young stated, “It is extremely hard to make the All-State Band and it is all about individual effort. We have been fortunate to have some All State band Members in Wills Point. Whitney will be our 30th All State Member since 2000. We are so proud of Whitney and all the students that were selected to the Area auditions.”
Whitney, the daughter of Edward and Angie McSparrin, stated, “I am so excited to be in the All State Band. It was a goal of mine since Area last year when I didn’t make it. I practiced everyday since the beginning of June on my music. This is the most exciting event in my band career so far. I was so stoked when I saw my name on the results list”
McSparrin’s road to the All-State Band began competing against approximately 300 other clarinet players.
Young said, “Our Area is one of the five Areas in our state. It spans Caddo Mills, up to Commerce and all the way to Abilene and Amarillo…only 28 [clarinet players] made it to Area and eight were chosen to be members of the All-State Band.”
Young concluded, “Whitney will be going to San Antonio for the Texas Music Educators Association convention and will audition once again for the All-State Band where she will be placed into either the Symphonic or Concert Texas All-State Band. She will rehearse for three days and then perform in the Lila Cockrell Theater for an audience of approximately 2,500 parents and band directors.”
