Close to 100 registered sex offenders across the county were surprised Saturday morning during an annual countywide roundup.

Officers from the Van Zandt County Sheriff’s Office, along with officers from the Canton, Grand Saline and Van Police Departments, conducted a check on the offenders to be sure each was in compliance with their court ordered requirements.

Deputy Donna Still, who is the county’s sex offender compliance officer, said that 99 offenders were checked, 92 of which she is responsible for. Still said that the other seven offenders are covered by city jurisdiction.

"I take my job very seriously. If an offender moves into the county, they have seven days to notify the department that they are here. They also have seven days to inform me of any changes, such as address, change in vehicles or change in employment," said Still.

Still said that if any offender is found violating any compliance requirement or case specific condition, a warrant will be issued for that individual.

Still said that officers verified all information on record for the 99 offenders on Saturday. Two men were found to be in violation during Saturday’s round up and warrants have been issued for their arrests.

"We are very diligent in keeping up with these offenders. Citizens are a good tool. I have many concerned citizens that help me keep an eye on these people," said Still.

"It is my responsibility to the victims to keep track of these offenders and make sure they are in compliance with all requirements," said Still.
