The Valedictorian for the Van High School Class of 2008 is Lindsay McFarland. This year’s salutatorian will be Carlos Lopez.

McFarland has a 101.6 grade point average and has attended Van Schools for 13 years.

She was a member of the FCCLA in 2005, the Spanish Club in 2005-2006 and band in 2005-2008 where she was a majorette in 2005-2007. She was also a member of the Van High School Choir in 2006-2007.

McFarland is a member of the National Honor Society and has participated in UIL academics where she was a team regional qualifier in science.

Her peers also voted her most likely to succeed.

After graduation, McFarland plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin and major in business.

She will be receiving the Clan MacFarlane Society Scholarship for $1,000

She is the daughter of David and Jan McFarland.

Lopez will graduate second in the class with a 100.0 average. He has attended Van Schools for 13 years.

He was a member of the Mighty Vandal Band from 2004-2008, a member of the National Honor Society and participated in UIL academics where he served as co-president in 2006-2007. He was also on the first place district UIL math team in 2006-2007 and his classmates voted him Best Candidate to take home to parents.

After graduation, Lopez will attend Mississippi State University where he will major in Aerospace Engineering.

He will receive, from Mississippi State, a freshman academic excellence scholarship in the amount of $32,000 over four years; the salutatorian scholarship from the university in the amount of $500 and the non-resident freshman excellence scholarship from the college in the amount of $7,000.

He is the son of Antonio and Vicki Lopez.
