Tiger Start District 2-1, Fall To Royse City

Randal Brewer, Sports Editor

Photos By Randal Brewer Garrett Kinney supplies the highlight for the Tigers on this swing, driving a solo homerun to left-center against Royce City.

The Tigers baseball team’s early success in district came to a halt when Royse City came to town on Tuesday night. With both teams sitting at 2-0 in district play, the Tigers held an early lead, but the wheels came off in the fourth inning as the Bulldogs turned a 5-3 lead into a 10-3 margin, eventually winning, 13-3.

It was the Tigers on the topside of the big lead in the district opener against Quinlan, as Wills Point took a 14-3 win.

Jace Ellis helped the Tigers to a 3-0 lead with a two-run homer in the first. Wills Point built an 8-0 lead by the third, and finished the game with a six-run fourth.

Kiefer Davis, Colton Newton, Marshal Head and Austin Teel all had 2-for-2 games, with Head and Newton each picking up two RBIs. Newton got the win with a complete game.

Newton picked up another win in a 3-1 decision over Rains.

A leadoff single by Conner McPherson in the second inning, and doubles by Head and Austin Bardin, staked Wills Point to a 2-0 lead.

Davis hit a one-out single in the third, stole second and scored on a Garrett Kinney single.

That would all Newton would need, as he held Rains to five hits and struck out six.

Davis and Newton scored runs in the first inning against Royse City, and Kinney picked up the first of two RBIs as Wills Point took a 2-1 lead. Royse City recaptured the lead in the second, and held a 5-2 advantage going into the bottom of the third. That was when Kinney blasted a solo shot over the left-center field fence to cut the margin to 5-3.

Four hits and two errors in the top of the fourth opened the floodgates, though, and the Bulldogs captured sole possession of first place in the district race.

Wills Point is in Commerce tonight (Friday), and hosts the Community Braves on Tuesday.
