Michael French was officially hired as the new Quinlan ISD superintendent during a school board meeting Monday night.

French, the current superintendent at Scurry-Rosser ISD, will receive a three-year contract that will begin on July 1. He will replace Larry Johnson, who is retiring after 10 years as district superintendent.

The motion to hire French passed 6-0 with trustee Michelle Harrison absent from the meeting.

Also on Monday, the board approved participation in the Option Flexible Year Program (OFYP) for the 2008-2009 school year. The program provides a waiver from the regular 180-day instruction period to provide 10 days of specialized instruction for at-risk students.

Under the OFYP guidelines, at-risk students will attend for 180 days, while students not considered at-risk will attend for 170 days. On the designated 10 days, at-risk students will get a smaller teacher-to-student ratio and special instruction to target areas of need.

Any students not considered at-risk who need to attend school on those days — younger students whose parents may not be able to provide daycare, for instance — will receive educational enrichment instruction.

In other matters, the school board took the following action:

— After the oath of office was taken for board members elected on May 10, the board re-elected Kenny Stone as board president, Scott Cornuaud as vice president and Kevin Fritch as secretary.

— Accepted the resignations of faculty members Donna Turner, Janice Wolford, Miranda Jungman and Rebecca Tuerk.

— Approved an independent audit contract with Rutherford, Taylor and Co. for the year ending June 30, 2008.

— Approved June 6 as "Take Your Daughters/Sons to Work Day."

— Approved a warranty deed of a property sale for a 3.04-acre lot in the Caddo Mesa addition.
