VFW Honors Student

J.C. Jones, Correspondent

A young man that has donated hundreds of hours of service to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Ladies Auxiliary, Memorial Post 2559, West Tawakoni, was honored by the members of the post in a special ceremony.

The crowd applauded as 17-year-old Ryan Dylan Smith, of West Tawakoni was presented with the "Outstanding Volunteer Award."

The crowd was told of the hundreds of hours that he had spent assisting former prisoners of war during their meetings and meals. Smith also helped plant hundreds of American Flags on the graves of all known veterans in the Lake Tawakoni area.

He has been involved in multiple other activities of the VFW and Auxiliary including his assistance during a district meeting that was held at the West Tawakoni VFW the second weekend of August.

The crowd of 21 VFW posts might have overwhelmed the volunteers of the local post, but the young volunteer rushed to help.

Local VFW post Commander Jim Leathers said, "We are proud of a young man that has said that he is proud to assist our veterans. He helped in many ways from serving food to simply taking out the trash and has always asked for additional tasks."

Smith has applied to join the Men’s Auxiliary of the VFW. This new organization is open to the sons of any veterans, male or female, that have served in foreign combat.

VFW Memorial Post 2559 Quartermaster John Ringwood said, "We have almost enough possible new members of the planned Men’s Auxiliary to form a new post for male members that are not veterans but are the sons of veterans of overseas combat."

Ringwood also said that the post needs about five new members to apply for the minimum 25 prospective members that are needed to form a new VFW Men’s Auxiliary and to receive a charter.

Any man that is not a veteran but is the son of a veteran may apply for membership. The new post men’s auxiliary prospective members must present a DD-214 that proves their fathers, brothers or other close relatives have served overseas in combat areas (Bosnia, Serbia, Grenada, Korea, Vietnam, World War II, Iraq, Afghanistan or any other combat action that presented a campaign medal for the veteran)

Those interested may apply for membership at the post or call (903) 447-4584 for information.
