Tropical Storm Ike Hits Hunt County

J.C. Jones, Correspondent

Hunt County and its bordering neighbor counties were hit with high winds and drenching rainfall as Tropical Storm Ike passed through Saturday.

Some places in Hunt County sustained damage from high winds and fallen trees, causing power outages and a few county roads were blocked.

Hunt County Commissioner Phillip Martin said, "I had to dispatch several of the county employees to clear the roadways of my precinct. They used chainsaws to clear the county roads but one fallen tree on Hunt County Road 2101 was too large to use our chainsaws.

"We used a backhoe to move the toppled tree off of the roadway and we plan to remove the large tree at a later date," Martin said.

Power outages resulted in some areas but most of the county was deluged with sudden heavy rain and high winds. Still, it seemed to escape the damage of the southern shores of Texas and nearby states.

All of the area fire departments were on full standby as the tropical storm passed and no major incidents were reported.

The flags of the American National Bank in Quinlan snapped into the reported 45-to-50 miles per hour winds as the storm passed.
