A three-day 2014 Catfish Festival was announced this week for the official Catfish Capitol of Texas.
The impact from the remarkable success of the first noodling tournament ever held in Texas was still being felt at Lake Tawakoni when West Tawakoni Park Board Chairman Billy Creed announced the three-day event.
The festival will be held at West Tawakoni City Park from 4 p.m. Oct. 2 to 9 p.m. Oct. 4.
“This year, the Catfish Festival will be hosting a circus, golf cart races, chili cook off, a car show and of course a catfish tournament,” Creed said.
He said the festival would feature a circus on Thursday, Oct. 2, and the fishing tournament on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 3 and 4.
“On Oct. 4, we will also have the car show, chili cookoff and golf cart races,” he said.
Creed quipped, “Did somebody say Redneck 500 Golf Cart Races? Yes, we did — $10 to enter. Get your golf cart ready and be the first to ever win this type of event here in Central Texas. Two categories — electric and gas— this will be done on an oval track, made from rock.”
Creed said the catfish tournament would be with rod and reels.
“You may fish only on Lake Tawakoni, but you can fish anywhere on the lake,” he said. “This will be a catch-and-release fishing tournament with three categories — men’s biggest fish, women’s biggest fish and 12-and-under biggest fish.”
Entry fee for each contestant is $10.
Winner of each category takes all the prize money from entrance fees for their category,” Creed said. “Any catfish counts — blues, flathead or channel. Other prizes may be awarded.”
He said, “The circus is coming. Get your tickets early — big cats, elephants, clowns, acrobatics, fun, fun fun. Business owners, get your tickets for the whole company at a discount. Parents, buy now and save money at the gate.”
