Wills Point residents near the Lybrand railroad crossing received a rude awakening this morning, as a Union Pacific train collided with a tractor trailer hauling gas at approximately 1:15 a.m.
Reports from the scene indicate the tractor trailer had either stalled or suffered a mechanical failure on the crossing. Officers in the area and local residents attempted to flag down the approaching UP train, but the 101 car train couldn’t stop in time.
The driver of the tractor trailer, who was away from his vehicle, and conductor and engineer on the train, were all spared serious injury. County fire departments, police departments, state troopers, and UP officials have been on the scene all morning, putting out fires and helping the cleanup effort.
The tracks were expected to be reopened at 10 a.m.
